THINE BE THE GLORY/
A TOI LA GLOIRE

Edmond Louis Budy & George Frederick Handel
English translation by R. Birch Hoyle

Thine be the glory,
Risen, conquering Son,
Endless is the victory
Thou o'er death hast won.
Angels in bright rainment
Rolled the stone away,
Kept the folded grave-clothes
Where the body lay.

CHORUS
Thine be the glory,
Risen, conquering Son,
Endless is the victory
Thou o'er death hast
won.

Lo, Jesus meets us,
Risen from the tomb!
Lovingly He greets us,
Scatters fear and gloom.
Let the Church with gladness
Hymns of triumph sing,
For her Lord now liveth,
Death hath lost its sting.

No more we doubt Thee
Glorious Prince of life;
Life is naught without Thee:
Aid us in our strife;
Make us more than conquerors,
Through Thy deathless love;
Lead us in Thy triumph
To Thy home above.

A Toi la gloire,
O Ressuscité!
A Toi la victoire
Pour l'éternité.
Brillant de lumière,
L'ange est descendu
Il roule la pierre
Du tombeau vaincu.

CHORUS
A Toi la gloire,
O Ressuscité!
A Toi la victoire
Pour l'éternité.

Vois-le paraître:
C'est Lui, c'est Jésus!
Ton sauveur ton maître,
Oh! ne doute plus!
Sois dans l'allégresse,
Peuple du Seigneur,
Et
redis sans cesse
Que Christ est vainqueur.

Craindrais-je encore?
Il vit à jamais,
Celui que j'adore,
Le Prince de paix.
Il est ma victoire,
Mon puissant soutient,
Ma vie et ma gloire:
Non, je ne crains rien.

April 21, 2003 (Al): Yesterday was Easter. Our church has a sunrise service each Easter under the pavillon at the high point of the Parc de Belleville. Nicole, Jöel, and I joined about 40 others on this cool morning. Jöel was by far the youngest at this service. From the pavillon is one of the best views of Paris and a great place to pray for the city. As we were standing and singing different songs, we could look out and see the Eiffel Tower, the Montparnasse Tower, etc.

Near the end of the service, we sang the classic French hymn A Toi La Gloire. This has the same tune and a fairly similar translation to the English hymn Thine Be The Glory. Nicole and I both remember singing the English hymn on many past Easters in the U.S. We were both moved to sing this in French yesterday. Our church does a lot of contemporary choruses, which we enjoy. However, it is good to have a mix of both old classics of the Church and the newer praise and worship songs that the Spirit is inspiring.
